Jade Van der Mark, painter and fashion designer, is a 26 years old dutch artist.
She grow up in a small village in the north of the Netherlands, called Bergen, with her parents and her little brother Noah.
Since she was a child she always felt different, her attention was captured by nature, art, spirituality and fashion. Even when she grown she found difficult to settle in the university environment, but thanks to her paintings she has never lost herself. After attending various art-schools without ever end them, she finally realized that her path was different, what has always showed her emotions.
This year she exposed in Milan during the design week in the pavillon, with her fashion collection. Her garments are eccentric, full of feeling and passion; each element is studied in detail and it portray the soul of who created it with all her being.
Jade Van der Mark, pittrice e fashion designer, è un’artista olandese di 26 anni. E’ cresciuta in un piccolo paesino nel nord dell’Olanda, chiamato Bergen, con i suoi genitori e il fratello minore Noah.
Fin da quando era una bambina si è sempre sentita diversa, la sua attenzione era attirata dalla natura, dall’arte, dalla spiritualità e dalla moda. Anche quando è cresciuta ha trovato difficoltà ad adattarsi all’ambiente universitario, ma grazie ai suoi dipinti non ha mai perso se stessa. Dopo aver frequentato varie scuole d’arte senza mai terminarle, ha finalmente realizzato che la sua strada era un’altra, quella che le sue emozioni le indicavano da sempre.
Quest’anno ha esposto a Milano durante la design week nel padiglione olandese, con la sua collezione di moda. I suoi abiti sono eccentrici, pieni di sentimento e passione; ogni elemento è studiato nel dettaglio e rappresenta l’anima di chi lo ha creato mettendoci tutta se stessa.
You are very young, but you already worked in both art and fashion. What relation they have for you? Do you have an artist or designer who ispires you?
Sei molto giovane, eppure hai già lavorato sia nell’arte che nella moda. Che relazione hanno per te? C’è un artista o designer a cui ti ispiri?
My paintings are part of the design story, they are the first transformation from idea into a collection. They tell a story and give me a base to go from there to a new garment. In my opinion paintings and fashion are inextricable linked to each other. They can’t exist without each other.
It’s a great feeling to paint what i feel and see straight from my heart on canvas, which gives a direct translation of color, form and expression. The fashion is different story, translating a fashion design is much less directly, when it comes to shape, color and expression. That’s why I like to work from direct to indirect.
Seperately from fashion, I sell my paintings and participate in various projects: for example, I am invited for a solo show Gallery in New Yorks’ art district.
The range of colors that I have used for the Milan collection are all based on the paintings i made prior to the creation of the garments.
That’s why I went looking for a direct translation from canvas to design. I looked for different yarn, some favorite colors, so i could work directly on the cloth.
I don’t get my inspiration from designers, more from photography or art like, Damien Hirst, Marina Abramovic, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon or Markus Lupertz. I am also very inspired by architecture, like Jean Nouvel, Santiago Calatrafa, Zaha Hadid. But mostly of the time i am inspired by different colours and humanity.
I miei dipinti sono parte della storia progettuale, sono la prima trasformazione di un’idea in una collezione. Essi raccontano una storia e mi danno la base per passare da quest’ultima ad un nuovo indumento. A mio parere pittura e moda sono indissolubilmente legati tra loro. L’uno non può esistere senza l’altro.
E’ una bellissima sensazione dipingere quello che sento e vedo direttamente dal mio cuore alla tela, che dà una diretta traslazione di colore, forma ed espressione. La moda è una storia diversa, trasferire un disegno di moda è molto meno diretto, quando si tratta di forma, colore ed espressione. Ecco perchè mi piace lavorare dal diretto all’indiretto.
Separatamente dalla moda, vendo i miei dipinti e partecipo a diversi progetti: ad esempio sono stata invitata per una mostra personale in una galleria al New Yorks’ art district. La gamma di colori che ho usato per la collezione di Milano è totalmente basata sui dipinti che ho realizzato prima della creazione degli abiti. Per questo sono andata alla ricerca di una diretta trasposizione dalla tela al design. Ho cercato un differente filato, alcuni colori preferiti, in modo da poter lavorare direttamente sulla stoffa.
Non prendo ispirazione dai designer, più che altro dalla fotografia o dall’arte come da Damien Hirst, Marina Abramovic, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon o Markus Lupertz. Vengo molto ispirata anche dall’architettura, come ad esempio da Jean Nouvel, Santiago Calatrafa, Zaha Hadid. Tuttavia nella maggior parte delle volte mi ispiro dai diversi colori e dall’umanità.
How and when did you realized that this would be your job?
Come e quando hai realizzato che questo sarebbe stato il tuo lavoro?
I don’t see my creations as a job. I need to create! It’s my passion, my life. Creating new things is very natural for me and for me a way to survive in this crazy world. If I get touched by a person or event, then I paint and create to simmer down. I get inspired from humanity, dreams and colors.
I think we see the world with a blinkered view and don’t want to see what is really going on. We put everything in compartments, all live for ourselves and focus on money, money and even more money. We loose pure, real thing. I try to give an answer and make people aware of this using my fashion and paintings.
For that, I want to express the purity of things such as crafts, materials, techniques and of course creating my paintings.
My company aims to have a new collection each 1.5 year. It’s my way to create calmness in the design process, and is my way to keep distance from the mass fashion businesses. We focus on various projects in our direct surrounding, give chances to other people and add cultural value to our community. To be honest, I will be extremely happy if I can help people, can create things for them and can add a creative value to this world.
Ultimately, I am not a designer or painter, I am rather someone who transforms moments and inspiration to creations.
Already as a young child, I realized that this was my destination.
Non vedo le mie creazioni come un lavoro. Ho bisogno di creare! E’ la mia passione, la mia vita.
Creare nuove cose è davvero naturale per me, è il mio modo di sopravvivere in questo folle mondo. Se rimango colpita da una persona o da un avvenimento, poi dipingo e creo per calmarmi. Traggo ispirazione dall’umanità, dai sogni e dai colori.
Penso che noi vediamo il mondo con uno sguardo limitato e non vogliamo vedere ciò che realmente sta accadendo; mettiamo ogni cosa in scompartimenti, viviamo tutti per noi stessi e pensiamo solo al denaro, denaro ed ancora altro denaro. Perdiamo le cose pure, reali. Io tento di dare una risposta e rendere consapevole la gente usando la moda ed i miei dipinti. Per questo voglio esprimere la purezza di cose come l’artigianato, i materiali, le tecniche e ovviamente la creazione dei miei quadri.
La mia società punta ad avere una nuova collezione ogni anno e mezzo. E’ la mia maniera di creare con calma all’interno della fase progettuale, ed è la mia maniera di tenere le distanze dalla massa delle industrie di moda. Ci concentriamo su vari progetti nel nostro diretto ambiente, dando possibilità ad altre persone e accrescendo il valore culturale della nostra comunità. Ad essere sincera, sarei estremamente felice di poter aiutare le persone, di poter creare cose per loro e di poter aggiungere un valore creativo a questo mondo.
Infine, non sono una designer o una pittrice, sono piuttosto qualcuno che trasforma istanti ed ispirazioni in creazioni.
Già da bambina capii che questa era la mia vocazione.
What do you think about the future of fashion? On what would you like to work in your future projects?
Cosa pensi riguardo il futuro della moda? Su cosa vorresti lavorare nei tuoi futuri progetti?
Handcraft is a very important aspect of my designs. I choose consciously to take time for my collections, as my company does not want to contribute to mass production of large companies. We are purely focused on our unique fabrics and their own way of handle it. Recently we have weaving machines, so we can further improve the techniques. I will soon be traveling to Assouria in Morocco to get acquinted with these techniques.
For the future of fashion, we should give more thought on what fashion really is, what are the real motivations. We should think about the greed of man that is created by fashion industry today. It is a vicious circle of speed and money.
We see a huge number of small and large fashion companies that offer poor quality. Their main drivers are money and being hip. If we will make six collections per year, we throw away purity and authenticity of also the meaning of fashion.
Fashion is a sense, fashion is an identity and packaging of our body, treat it with respect and calm, because your body has to wear it!
I would like to grow slowly and guide and help my staff well in what they do. I will open my office in
on 1 September. My team and I will work hard on the new collection. I promise to present a very intense show, which will affect people! It will be my first real show and I want to show the audience immediately where I stand for!
The world of fashion have to wake up!
L’artigianato è un aspetto molto importante nei miei progetti. Ho scelto consapevolmente di prendere del tempo per le mie collezioni, come la mia azienda non voglio contribuire alla produzione di massa delle grandi compagnie. Siamo puramente focalizzati sui nostri tessuti unici e sul proprio modo di reagire. Da poco abbiamo delle macchine per la tessitura, cosiì possiamo migliorare ulteriormente le tecniche. Viaggerò presto ad Assouria, in Marocco, per acquisire queste tecniche.
Per il futuro della moda, dovremmo pensare di più a quello che la moda realmente è, a quelle che sono le reali motivazioni. Dovremmo pensare all’avidità dell’uomo creato dall’industria della moda oggi. E’ un circolo vizioso di velocità e denaro. Vediamo un gran numero di piccole e grandi aziende di moda che offrono scarsa qualità. I loro principali elementi guida sono i soldi e l’essere alla moda.
Se noi facessimo sei collezioni all’anno perderemmo la purezza e l’autenticità ed anche il significato della moda. Moda è un senso, moda è un’identità ed una copertura, da trattare con calma e rispetto, poichè il tuo corpo deve indossarlo!
Mi piacerebbe crescere lentamente e guidare ed aiutare il mio staff al meglio in quello che fanno. Aprirò il mio ufficio ad Amsterdam il 1° settembre. Il mio team ed io lavoreremo duramente alla nuova collezione. Prometto di presentare uno show davvero intenso, che colpirà la gente! Sarà la mia prima vera sfilata e voglio mostrare subito al pubblico quello che rappresento!
Il mondo della moda deve svegliarsi!
