REAL TIME – SCHIPHOL CLOCK BY MAARTEN BAAS

In 2016, Maarten Baas created the Schiphol clock in which a working man can be seen painting the time minute by minute. The clock is installed in the international terminal of the Amsterdam airport, one of the last things travellers see before departing the Netherlands. The worker’s blue overalls, yellow rag and red bucket pay homage to the famous Dutch artist, Mondrian.

The Real Time series are 12-hour films of performances indicating the time. With Real Time, Baas combines theatre, art, film and design in a series of new clock designs. Real Time was launched in April 2009 at the Salone Del Mobile in Milan, Italy with with the Sweepers, Analog Digital and Grandfather clocks. Since then, Real Time has expanded from films and grandfather clocks, to an iphone app and special commissions, such as the Schiphol clock.

“The Real Time Schiphol Clock is basically a big box hanging from the ceiling in Lounge 2. For this work I decided on the most archetypical form of a clock, but it has a ladder going up to it and a little door that you wouldn’t even notice at first glance.” The ladder and door are there to enable this imaginary man in his blue overalls to enter the clock. “He has a red bucket and a yellow cleaning cloth and he is cleaning up after the hands of time, after which he creates a new minute, every time again.” By Maarten Baas

Real Time è una serie di film della durata di 12 ore, la cui trama ha come protagonista lo scorrere del tempo. Con Real Time, Baas unisce teatro, arte, cinema e design in una serie di nuovi progetti legati all’orologio. Real Time è stato lanciato ad aprile 2009 presso il Salone del Mobile di Milano con: Sweepers, Analog Digital and Grandfather clocks. Da allora, Real Time ha ampliato la sua applicazione, da orologio a pendolo, ad una app per iPhone fino a raggiungere commissioni speciali, come l’orologio dell’areroporto di Schiphol.

Baas ha creato l’opera Schiphol clock, in cui un uomo in divisa da lavoro, dipinge il passare del tempo minuto per minuto. L’orologio è installato nel terminal internazionale dell’aeroporto di Amsterdam, ed è una delle ultime cose che i viaggiatori guardano prima di partire dall’Olanda. L’autore dell’installazione, inserendo la tuta blu del lavoratore, il panno di colore giallo e un secchio rosso ha voluto rendere omaggio al famoso artista olandese, Mondrian.

“The Real Time Schiphol Clock è fondamentalmente una grande scatola appesa al soffitto della Lounge 2. Per questo lavoro, ho scelto la forma più archetipica di un orologio, ma c’è una scala per raggiungerlo e una porticina che non si nota a prima vista.” La scala e la porta sono lì per consentire a questo uomo immaginario vestito con la sua tuta blu di entrare dentro l’orologio. “Ha un secchio rosso e un panno per le pulizie giallo, e il suo incarico è pulire le lancette del tempo, minuto dopo minuto.” cit.
