“Hypothesis “is the first retrospective in Italy by Philippe Parreno designed as a choreographed space, modulated in a sequence of events. The exhibition, which features some of the most significant works of the artist, redefines radically the perception of HangarBicocca‘s industrial environments: lights, shadows, moving images and sounds extend both the physical limits of the works and those of the architectural elements, immersing visitors in an environment where the spatial dimensions and time references seem to participate in a score in which everyone is both cause and consequence of something else. Nineteen Marquees, plexiglass sculptures, lights and sound, are suspended on the space and the installation origin Danny the Street, 2006-2015: an imaginary street along the exhibition space.
Philippe Parreno creates artworks that question the boundaries between reality and fiction, exploring the nebulous realm in which the real and the imagined blur and combine. Working in a diverse range of media including sculpture, drawing, film, and performance the internationally acclaimed French artist seeks to expand our understanding of duration, inviting us to radically re-evaluate the nature of reality, memory, and the passage of time. Central to Parreno’s practice is his quest for an ultimate form of communication capable of transcending language. Taking the exhibition as a medium, Parreno has radically redefined the exhibition experience by exploring its possibilities as a coherent “object” rather than as a collection of individual works. To this end, he conceives his shows as a scripted space where a series of events unfolds. The visitor is guided through the galleries by the orchestration of sound and image, which heightens their sensory experience. This is a question of creating, in a given volume, as much space and time as possible by folding and unfolding the space onto itself.
“Hypothesis” è la prima antologica in Italia di Philippe Parreno ed è concepita come uno spazio coreografato, modulato in una sequenza di eventi. La mostra, che presenta alcune tra le più significative opere dell’artista fra loro ricombinate, ridefinisce radicalmente la percezione degli ambienti industriali di HangarBicocca: luci, ombre, immagini in movimento e suoni estendono sia i limiti fisici delle opere sia quelli degli elementi architettonici, immergendo i visitatori in un ambiente dove le dimensioni spaziali e i riferimenti temporali sembrano partecipare a una partitura in cui ciascuno è sia causa sia conseguenza di qualcos’altro. Diciannove Marquees, sculture in plexiglass, luci e suono, sono sospese nello spazio e danno origine all’installazione Danny the Street, 2006-2015: una strada immaginaria lungo le “Navate” di HangarBicocca.
Nel corso degli ultimi vent’anni Philippe Parreno ha reinventato il concetto di mostra come allestimento di opere d’arte creando un’esperienza inedita dello spazio espositivo in cui una serie di eventi si svolgono in successione fra loro, come se fossero organizzati seguendo una coreografia. Utilizzando un’ampia varietà di media tra cui scultura, disegno, film, video, musica e scrittura, l’artista, fin dall’inizio della sua carriera, ha esplorato i confini della realtà e della sua rappresentazione, mediante codici e linguaggi differenti provenienti dalla radio, dalla televisione, dal cinema e, più recentemente, dall’informatica. Nell’ambito del suo percorso artistico, Parreno ha messo in discussione il concetto di autorialità collaborando con alcuni fra i più influenti artisti degli ultimi due decenni.
