Design evolves day by day, could be viewed as an activity that translates an idea into a blueprint for something useful, it is integral part of our life because everything around us is designed from products to clothes to the digital world. It gets more interesting when design mets other disciplines, in this case biology.
Maurizio Montalti is the founder of Officina Corpuscoli. He translates into a design-oriented process, a long and exciting research oriented to the exploration of a material called Mycelium.
The Mycelium is the vegetative apparatus of mushrooms and is formed from a bow of filaments, where protoplasm flow. If properly stimulated, these filaments can join linearly forming ordered structures.
Maurizio decided to develop projects for a eco-friendly system and a self-sustaining society, working to minimise the energy processes, emissions, waste and cost.
Travelling through micro-landscapes and experimental alchemies, it is possible to follow the evolution of “cultivated” objects, deriving from the action of natural, widespread fungal organisms (mushrooms), employed as agents of cohesion and transformation of organic elements, such as fibres and agricultural wastes.“The Future of Plastic” represents an open invitation to the need of researching possible alternatives and potentially different futures, in which plastics exist as a completely natural material.
Through these methods, you can get both structural and decorative materials, underlining the organic component. Furthermore mycelium materials are 100% compostable. The objective of the research is to demonstrate the ability to reduce the use of most of the traditional plastic materials (based on toxic processes). The power of this research is clearly not limited to the final product. It is based on open-source logic and points to the transition from the usual productive paradigms, from manufacture to cultivation of materials. Not a bad idea! Now we will wait his project presented at the under 35 category at XXI Triennale of Milan.
Maurizio Montalti, designer nostrano formatosi alla Design Academy di Eindhoven, ideatore e realizzatore di Officina Corpuscoli, è riuscito a tradurre in un processo design oriented, una lunga ed appassionante ricerca, orientata all’esplorazione, allo sviluppo ed al consolidamento di metodologie per l’utilizzo del Mycelium, come componente principale di nuovi elementi materici.Il Mycelium (in italiano Micelio) è l’apparato vegetativo dei funghi ed è formato da un intreccio di filamenti detti ife, tubuli in cui scorre il protoplasma (complesso di sostanze circondate dalla membrana cellulare). Se opportunamente stimolate, tali ife possono unirsi linearmente affastellandosi e formando strutture ordinate ed utili alla progettazione umana.Lo scenario futuribile in cui ha deciso di muoversi Maurizio, è quello dei sistemi eco-friendly e delle self-sustaining society, volte alla minimizzazione di processi energetici, emissioni, scarti e costi.Attraverso tali metodologie, è possibile ottenere materiali sia strutturali che decorativi, sottolineando la componente organica, sia alla vista che al tatto. Inoltre i matieriali micelici, sono compostabili al 100%, quindi la loro disimissione sarà parte di un nuovo processo vitale.L’obiettivo della ricerca è dimostrare la possibilità di mandare in pensione, nel prossimo futuro, la gran parte dei tradizionali materiali plastici (basati su processi tossici).La potenza di questa ricerca non si limita ovviamente al prodotto finale. Essa si basa sulla logica open-source e punta alla transizione dai consueti paradigmi produttivi, dalla fabbricazione alla coltivazione dei materiali: non male come concetto, no? Adesso aspetteremo il suo nuovo progetto presentato nella categoria under 35 per la XXI Triennale di Milano.
